Samuel Thomson was a man in New York who would walk up to strangers & begin a conversation. Gaining their trust, he would ask people to express confidence in him by giving him money or watch and would never return back. After he was arrested in 1849, he was labelled - “the Confidence Man”, later shortened to “Con Man”.
